From a basal clump of foliage emerges an upright spike bearing multiple flowers, usually in hues of blue, pink and purple. Most varieties are perennial but some are annual or biennial. Great for use as cut flowers as the flower spike can reach impressive heights. This quality however means they require some protection from the wind.
